How to Find an Au Pair

The U.S State Department is the designated sponsor for the au pair program, but individual companies administer it.

Au pairs can be men or women depending on your preference. Some single mothers prefer a male for their sons.

Au pairs are between eighteen and twenty six years old and are non- smokers. Au pairs must have had at least two hundred hours of childcare experience.

Au pairs must also be able to speak some English and know how to drive.

Au pair’s room Au pair’s room The host family must provide the au pair with his or her own room, medical insurance and a weekly stipend that is determined by the State Department of Labor. The host family must also give two weeks of paid vacation and at least five hundred dollars for continuing education.

Have fun Have fun The language barrier can be a challenge in the beginning for both the au pair and the host family. The au pair must also learn a different culture and the awkwardness of fitting into a new family.

Depending on where the au pair is from, most au pairs pick up English very quickly, in about three months.
